ABOUT THE IELTS

IELTS are of two types: academic and general education. IELTS academic can be placed on paper or computer in a test center and can now be accessed online from your home or any other private place with a stable Internet connection. IELTS general training can only be administered on paper or computer in a test center. For academic and general education, take the same hearing and language tests, but different reading and writing tests. Make sure you are preparing for the right type of test. The Hear, Read and Write sections of all the IELTS exams are completed the same day with no pauses in between. However, the language assessment can be taken up to one week before or following the other tests. When you book IELTS online, the language assessment usually takes place before the other tests. The total test duration is 2 hours 45 minutes.

Test format listening (30 minutes)

You listen to 4 recordings by native speakers of English and then write down your responses to a number of questions.

Record 1 - a discussion between two people that takes place in a daily social context.
Record 2 - A monologue that takes place in everyday social contexts, e.g. a speech on local institutions.
Record 3 - a discussion between up to 4 persons, which takes place in an educational context, e.g. a tutor at the university and a student in discussing a task.
Record 4 - A monologue about an academic topic, e.g. a university lecture.

The assessors will look for evidence of their ability to understand key ideas and in-depth factual information; the speakers “views and attitudes; the purpose of a statement; and evidence of their ability to track the evolution of ideas.

Test Format – Read (60 minutes)

The Reading section is made up of 40 questions that have been developed to test a broad spectrum of reading skills. This includes reading for the core, reading for the main ideas, Reading for the detail, Skimming, Understanding Logical Arguments, and Recognizing Writers “Opinions, Attitudes, and Goals.

Test format - academic writing (60 minutes)

Topics of general interest and suitable for subjects who are starting a basic and postgraduate course or who wish to register professionally. There are two tasks:

Job 1 - You are presented with a diagram, a table, a diagram or a diagram, and are asked to describe or summarize the information in their own words. You may be requested to describe data, to describe the stages in a process, to describe how something works, or to describe an object, or event.
Assignment 2 - You are asked to write a paper in answer to a viewpoint, argument, or problem. The answers to both tasks have to be formalised.

Test format - Speech (11 - 14 minutes)

The speaking section will evaluate your usage of spoken English. Every test is recorded.

Part 1 - The examiner asks general questions about himself or herself and a number of familiar subjects such as housing, family, employment, study and interests. This part takes between four to five minutes.
Part 2 - You will receive a card that asks you to speak about a specific topic. You have a minute to prepare yourself before you speak for up to 2 minutes. The examiner then asks a question or two on the same subject.
Part 3 - Part 2 will ask you further questions on the topic. These will provide you with an opportunity to discuss abstract ideas or themes. This section of the test takes four to five minutes.
